Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the likelihood of developing varicose veins. And if you’re already living with painful varicose veins, regular exercise can reduce your symptoms and even help your condition from worsening.

While most forms of exercise are healthy and beneficial, these 6 exercises are especially helpful for preventing varicose veins, and lessening symptoms such as swelling, itchiness, or heaviness.

1. Walking

Walking is a highly beneficial exercise, and one that is usually safe for people of all ages and fitness levels. Walking for 30 minutes a day can help you lose weight, maintain a healthy blood pressure, and strengthen your bones and muscles.

2. Leg Lifts

Leg lifts are a great simple stretch that don’t require any special equipment. Begin by laying flat on your back and slowly lift one leg. Hold the leg in the air for a few seconds, then alternate. You can also practice leg lifts while standing by holding onto a stable object, such as a chair, and extending one leg in front of you. Hold for a few seconds, then switch.

3. Bicycling

Biking is a low impact exercise, which is useful for preventing or lessening symptoms of varicose veins. This can help increase your circulation while protecting your joints. Regular cycling also strengthens your calf muscles, which can promote healthy blood flow. If traditional cycling is too difficult or inconvenient, you may also use a stationary bike to achieve the same benefits.

4. Lunges

Lunges work many different muscle groups in your feet and calves, both of which are important for blood flow in the leg. Begin by standing with your feet slightly apart. Step forward and bend your knee. Be sure to keep your knee directly above your ankle. Hold the lunge for a few seconds, then straighten up and switch legs.

5. Swimming

Swimming offers many advantages for those with varicose veins. Water exercise gets you off of your feet, horizontal in the water, works your leg and calf muscles, and helps the blood flow return to your heart.

Along with improving circulation, dancing is a great social activity and mood booster.

Exercise can often provide significant relief from painful symptoms of varicose veins, but physical activity alone is often not enough. In addition, varicose veins can still develop even if you’re physically active.
