5 No-Equipment Exercises For Varicose Vein Prevention

As gyms around the country reopen, you may still feel uncomfortable working out in such a public, enclosed place. But, finding the motivation to exercise at home can often be difficult. 

Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the likelihood of developing varicose veins, and reduce your symptoms or even help your condition from worsening if you’re already living with varicose veins. So it’s important to make time for some physical activity.

While most forms of exercise are healthy and beneficial, these 5 exercises are especially helpful for preventing varicose veins, and lessening symptoms such as swelling, itchiness, or heaviness. The best part? None of them require any fancy equipment or exercise gear.

  1. Leg Lifts

Leg lifts are a great simple stretch that don’t require any special equipment. Begin by laying flat on your back and slowly lift one leg. Hold the leg in the air for a few seconds, then alternate. You can also practice leg lifts while standing by holding onto a stable object, such as a chair, and extending one leg in front of you. Hold for a few seconds, then switch.

2. Lunges

Lunges work many different muscle groups in your feet and calves, both of which are important for blood flow in the leg. Begin by standing with your feet slightly apart. Step forward and bend your knee. Be sure to keep your knee directly above your ankle. Hold the lunge for a few seconds, then straighten up and switch legs.

3. Calf Raises

Stand up straight, then push through the balls of your feet and raise your heel until you are standing on your toes. Then lower slowly back to the start. For more stability, you can support yourself against a wall or by holding onto a stable object like a chair.

4. Dancing

Along with improving circulation, dancing is a great mood booster. So turn up the radio, blast your favorite Spotify channel, or turn on a dance workout video. 

5. Walking

Okay, this one does require you to leave the house, but getting some fresh air will be good for you - physically and mentally. Walking is a highly beneficial exercise, and one that is usually safe for people of all ages and fitness levels. Walking for 30 minutes a day can help you lose weight, maintain a healthy blood pressure, and strengthen your bones and muscles. Just remember to keep your distance from others while out on your walk.

Exercise can often provide significant relief from painful symptoms of varicose veins, and help prevent developing them. Take some time each day to get moving. Your veins will thank you.
